The term mindset has become a trending buzzword in the online business space, but the concept is nothing new. In general, your mindset is your attitude and what you choose to focus on.
Changing your mindset can make all the difference in your business. It can empower you to feel confident and combat self-doubt and fear of failure. It is a skill, and developing a new skill takes practice.
5 Ways to Improve Your Online Business Mindset
1. Get clear on your “Why”
The more time you spend around online entrepreneurs, the more you’ll hear people talk about “Your Why”. They are talking about how the reason why you are working towards a goal will keep you focused when you are struggling to stay motivated. People often say“Remember Your Why” or “Get Clear on Your Why.”
Somewhere along the way, I learned that this concept can be attributed to Friedrich Nieztche, who said: “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.”
Basically, the key to having a positive and successful mindset is to define your Why and call on it when you’re feeling overwhelmed or challenged.
Why did you start your business in the first place?
For me, I started my own business because I want to be my own boss and have more control over how I spend each day of my life. There will be times when you feel like you’ve reached your threshold and you can’t move towards your goals. When that happens, remember your Why and you will get a burst of motivation to keep going.
2. Clear your mind
Having a regular practice for getting out of your head is essential for your mindset. Having the skills to remove unwanted thoughts, feelings and perceptions can allow you to focus on what’s really important to you.
If you’re wondering how to clear your mind, there are a number of ways to do this. The most popular methods are meditation (or sitting in silence), exercising, or doing a hobby that requires your undivided attention.
What all of these things have in common is that they require you to focus on your breathing and be present in the moment. When you are present in the moment, you are less likely to experience negative thoughts.
A bonus of doing anything that makes you breathe deeply is that you get a nice oxygen rush to the head, which is a natural mood elevator. Also, physical activity can flood you with endorphins, which will also make you feel amazing.
Having a mind-clearing practice in the morning will support you throughout the rest of your day. When you can personalize your morning routine you will be more likely to stick to it.
3. Do a little something every day
When I first started my web design business, I was also in the middle of leaving my hometown to move out of state. That was a whole project on its own, let alone adding in the huge project of starting a new business from scratch.
In the beginning of my process, I didn’t have a clear plan for running my business. I had no idea how much of a commitment I had created for myself I could even launch.
As I started to chip away at the mountain of my to-do list, I became paralyzed with fear and anxiety. That flooding sensation of overwhelm made me not want to take any action at all.
During a chat with my mom, I told her how overwhelmed I was feeling. She simply said, “It’s okay. Just do a little something every day.” That was game-changing for me.
Instead of avoiding any action because I was so overwhelmed by the big picture, I just did a little something every day. I started to see the progress I was making, and it motivated me to keep moving forward. Now I looked back at some of my to-do lists from those early days and I am filled with accomplishment when I see how many tasks are crossed off.You have a deeper well of energy than you give yourself credit for. 4. Share your story with others
You can feel empowered and motivated when you share your story with others. Keeping it all to yourself will do you a disservice. You will have moments of clarity and discovery when you start talking to people.
In my example above, I had a simple but impactful breakthrough just by opening up and talking about what I was going through. If it hadn’t been for that conversation, I may procrastinated longer or even given up all together.
Create a habit of letting people into your world, and you will be surprised by what you get out of it.
Tell people about what you’re working on. Ask for feedback on one of your projects. Include your Why when you talk about what you do. Attend professional networking events and start chatting with strangers.
It might feel uncomfortable to open up to others. You may feel vulnerable, like you’re putting yourself out there for scrutiny. That mindset won’t create the abundant life you want for yourself.
We all want to connect with others. We all want to develop relationships. As an entrepreneur, you will always be intertwined with your brand. Sharing your story with others will help you grow professionally and personally.
5. Follow “The Greats”
We are so lucky to live in a time when there are so many entrepreneurs who have made it their life’s work to motivate and inspire others. We are also lucky that we live in the age of the internet, because everything we need is right there.
The successful entrepreneurs niche is a very savvy group. They have built their entire careers on figuring out the mindset that you need in order to get what you want, and they are sharing that information online.
Podcasts hosted by successful entrepreneurs are an excellent tool for working on your mindset. It is such an intimate and evergreen way to receive motivation, and the episodes also have lots of business tips in general.
Instagram is the trending platform these days, because we all expect a combination of visual content, video and streaming. The feed on my business account is filled with my favorite business owners because they are contributing uplifting, motivational posts that keep me inspired.
Your mindset makes all the difference
Your success is directly connected to your mindset. Changing your mindset takes time. The more you work on creating positive thoughts and feelings, the more you will start to see the changes you want in your business.
